Using adverbs+adjective pairs to intensify our writing

As the title suggests, one of the skills we are honing this week is using adverb+adjective pairs to intensify our writing. E.g. "The acting was simply dreadful." Here is a really well made resource about adverbs that can be both adverbs of manner - "He played fairly" and of degree "He played fairly well." It's a big site so try to focus on doing the questions for

"Practice 2

Emphasizing Your Viewpoint" - It's about 2/3 of the way down the page

To help with those questions and for your general knowledge please also browse the grammar notes at the top of the page. They are very well presented. Lastly, please keep this page open and apply some adverb+adjective combinations in your writing today.

We're going to watch Obama's new campaign advertisement featuring Samuel L Jackson. However, it is helpful to first become familiar with the actor Samuel L Jackson. In particular, he is famous for saying a particular word, watch this video and try to guess what it is.

Here is Obama's new video. The text is below, but first just watch and listen.

Questions: (post your answers as comments)

What does this video reveal about Obama's strategy?

What groups of the public is Obama targeting with this video?

What is the video encouraging people to do? Do you think it will work? Why/Why not?

Are there any parts of the video that you disagree with? Why/Why not?
For instance, "all politicians are the same" - What do you think?

In the silvery moonlight that bathes every town,
The people lie dreaming, so safe and so sound.
They're warm in their beds, snuggled up in their sheets,
but four years before they were out in the streets.
Now it's as if they don't know what's at stake,
All except one girl, wide-eyed and awake.
Little Susie is too worried to sleep,
She can't figure out why her family's so passive,
It's like they don't know that Romney and his Veep
Will remake the country in ways that are drastic.
She read his platform it scared her to death,
She's got to do something, while there's still time left!
I was little, the last time, but I still remember,
My whole family was out working together.
We canvassed and phone banked with passion and pluck
It matters more this time, but their eyes are shut.
Mom, Dad, the election's coming up soon.
We're tired right now, Hon, go back to your room.
Sorry, my friend, but there's no time to snore,
an out-of-touch millionaire's just declared War.
On schools, the Environment, Unions, fair pay,
We're all on our own, if Romney has his way.
And he's against Safety Nets, if you fall, tough luck.
So I strongly suggest that you Wake the Fuck Up!
In '08 my brother was on the frontlines,
but now he says he just can't find the time.
This election's about our whole future,
it's like you don't even care, man.
What? You believe in civil rights,
Well, Mitt Romney's no fan.
He's ok with voter suppression, wants gay marriage Banned.
He stood against the Dream Act, and he isn't worried about the poor.
If we don't do something right now, this is who we're asking for.
I hate to break it to you, sis, but all politicians are the same.
They're all the same? Big brother. Please.
Obama sent Seals to Bin Laden's place.
Romney sent jobs overseas.
How 'bout that Student Loan overhaul.
It's gonna save you thousands of bucks.
Mitt will cut that shit in a second. Hey dude, wake the fuck up.
Oh.my.god-d-d. It's Facebook official.
Hey what are you doing?
Before the last election you girls held bake sales for Obama.
With Mitt in office?  Get ready for drama.
A Vote for Romney is a vote to let Planned Parenthood get CUT.
Listen to your little sister. Wake the Fuck Up!
I know you're Facebooking, but wow.
Stop bullshitting, get out there and sell some cakes and cookies, now!
Grandma, Grandpa, can we talk?
Not now, Sweetie, can't it wait?
Hell no, it can't wait. Your lives will be affected.
Romney and Ryan will gut Medicare if they're elected.
Ask the Fact Checkers, those 2 are Fact Duckers!
What do you want us to do?
Say, "Hell, no! Motherfuckers!"
We've come a long way, but there still more to do.
And we need you all back in the fight till it's through.
Of course, you're so busy, and finding time's rough...
But - you can sleep, when you're dead.
Right nowWake the FUCK UP!

A study of I Want You Back by the Jackson 5

Here is "I want you back" by the Jackson 5 featuring a very young and talented Micheal Jackson and his all-singing, all-dancing family band. It has a 1 minute and 20 second long introduction which may skip if you like.

1. The first verse uses two common phrases. First of all there is "When I had you to myself." This comes from the general phrase "to have something (all) to oneself" - try and find a couple of other examples of this phrase on the internet and explain what they mean.

2. The second common phrase is the phrasal verb to "stand out" - What did Micheal mean when he said that he hadn't wanted his lady friend around beacuse she had stood out in the crowd?

3. In the second verse what kind of stains are discussed and who is leaving them?

4. "Someone picked you from the bunch" - this is a metaphor, what do we normally pick from bunches?

5. Lastly, which is your favourite costume and why?

I look forward to seeing your answers. - Dan

(Verse 1)
When I had you to myself
I didn't want you around
Those pretty faces always make you
Stand out in a crowd
But someone picked you from the bunch
One glance was all it took
Now it's much too late for me
To take a second look

(Chorus 1)
Oh baby give me one more chance
Won't you please let me
Back in your heart
Oh darlin I was blind to let you go
But now since I see you in his arms
I want you back
Oh I do now
I want you back
Ooh ooh baby
I want you back
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Na na na na

(Verse 2)
Tryin to live without your love
Is one long sleepless night
Let me show you girl
That I know wrong from right
Every street you walk right on
I leave tearstains on the ground
Following the girl
I didn't even want around
Let me tell you now

A study of God Only Knows by The Beach Boys

You should be abe to hear the song at this link -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDfH_J4MAUQ

First of all throw on some headphones, close your eyes and enjoy the song.

Next take a look at the lyrics:

I may not always love you
But [as] long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it

God only knows what I'd be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what I'd be without you .......

1.
Search the internet for other uses of the phrase "God only knows" (try entering it in google with quotation marks around the phrase). Show us what you find in the comment box and try to explain what the phrase means in that quote. Then, write your own sentence using the phrase "God only knows"

Alternately, do the same thing for the phrase "as long as" - avoid examples such as "An arm is as long as a leg" - what we want here is something like "As long as you pay me, I'll keep coming to work"

As a third alternative, do the same thing with the word "doubt"

2.
The singer begins the song with "I may not always love you,"  - do you think overall he does not really love the person he is singing to?

Leave your answers as a comment on this page, To do this click on "comments" and a box should open. Beside the box make sure that "anonymous" is selected (unless you have an account, in which case feel free to use that) - I look forward to seeing your ideas. Dan
